Davidson's Clinical Cases.

Pulmonary Cases with Dr. Rosenblum

One of the great things about being an Elsevier Student Ambassador is the opportunity to get some complimentary books. The worst thing about it is you have to actually review the book in return!

  • Davidson's 100 Clinical Cases E-Book?
  • Grade 9 Science - Sustainable Ecosystems; Questions and Answers.
  • Die deutschen Kolonien nach dem Versailler Vertrag (German Edition);
  • The Swoop! or How Clarence Saved England: A Tale of the Great Invasion!

The book is a shortlist of clinical case scenarios, many of which are quite common ailments but others which with modern medicine have become much rarer and you might never get an opportunity to see first hand as a medical student yet you are still expected to integrate knowledge on the topic. Although you might sometimes see patients with rheumatic heart disease, how many medical students actually see a patient presenting with rheumatic fever? I saw my first presentation of rheumatic fever on a visit to a rural aboriginal community, but very few medical students get this opportunity.

E-books for medical students

Davidsons can help bridge this gap in contextual learning Case 26 is Rheumatic Fever! In addition to the cases themselves, there is an appendix of biochemical and haematological values to help you interpret pathology, and a cardiovascular risk prediction chart.

  • Zen and the Art of Cyclology.
  • Compelling Interest: Examining the Evidence on Racial Dynamics in Colleges and Universities.
  • Ressourcenorientierte Teamarbeit: Systemische Praxis der kollegialen Beratung. Ein Lern- und Übungsbuch (German Edition)!

Contextual learning is my strong point — I learn better with a real patient, or at least a case scenario than I do from reading reams of text. Like any PBL scenario, you get more out of the investment in this book by doing additional work — I like to find a patient with similar symptoms or if possible the same diagnosis and get the hands on examination and history practice that further cements learning. If you sometimes find it difficult to know what to do or who to see on the wards, Davidsons gives you an excellent starting point.

The selection of clinical problems guides the reader, step by step, through the correct path in the maze between the presenting complaint of a patient and the final diagnosis. The text emphasises the value of interpreting available clinical and investigative information in a logical way before considering a definitive diagnosis. The cases are based on the 'presenting problems' of Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine.

The book provides an international outlook reflecting the differences in the practice of medicine in the developing world and in low-resource settings, and addresses the epidemiological, economic and other reasons for many of these important differences. The cases are written by a team of senior doctors, from 12 countries, with considerable teaching experience. The book now includes cases all closely linked to the 'presenting problems' sections of the latest 21st Edition of Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine.
